CONTACT

Messages and addresses.

Kittiwake is equipped with several means of communication and we will enjoy receiving messages from you. Here are the various ways. They each have advantages and disadvantages.

Satellite Telephone
The Inmarsat Mini M satellite phone works just like a mobile phone and we can ring out or receive calls at anytime and anywhere. This makes it very easy to use BUT it is very expensive costing several pounds per minute from land lines. This method should only be used for urgent messages when it is important to talk to us directly and you are not an expert radio user. Simply dial 00 8707 64634538

E-mail
The satellite phone also handles e-mail, which can be sent to Kittiwake@SkyFile.com

Likewise e-mails can be sent and received via the SSB long range radio. The address is MMPH7@sailmail.com

Although easy to use the data exchange rate by both satellite phone and radio is extremely slow compared to a normal telephone line, let alone Broadband. So it is very important to keep all messages short and not include attachments. It is also important to delete the original message when replying before sending the new one. This all helps to speed the transmission and save money.

Radio
Other vessels and licensed ham radio operators can contact us by VHF radio when within 30 miles or so and by MF/HF radio for longer distances. Our call sign is MMPH7 and our MMSI number for DSC calls is 235036055.

It will usually be necessary to pre-arrange a time and frequency using e-mail for MF/HF radio contact. Those who anticipate using this method will know what the acronyms stand for, what is meant by the above and why. Non-geeks don't need to be troubled by all this jargon! At these times we will also access our home e-mails WadeMark@Tiscali.co.uk (Mark) and n1tr0_10@hotmail.com (James) where we will be able to read longer eamails and attachments.

We will keep this website up to date with new information on our progress whenever we get the chance. This will usually be at each major stop-over point where we can download photos and stories from an internet café.

Thank you for your interest in Kittiwake's Atlantic Island Adventure. Do drop us a line and let us know what you think. We would love to hear from you.

Please use the satellite e-mail address Kittiwake@SkyFile.com as the preferred method of contact.

Mark and James Wade
